So about a month ago while we were walking to the barn at 10:00 pm to tuck the horses in. We noticed a dark shape in the parking area between the barns. I quietly walked over and saw that it was a pigeon... he didn't spook or fly away, so we left him alone. The next day he's moved into the little barn, and on day 3 he'd taken up walking up and down the aisleway in the big barn. We made sure he had water in this heat, and we'd find him standing in the pie plate full of water in the wash stall. He's walk up and down the aisleway during the day, and sleep in the stall next to Danny at night. We wondered if he'd been injured by a hawk or something- several times over the years we've had creatures move into the barns to recuperate... some leave and some stay.
Vicki went to the feed store and got some pigeon food; he didn't like the wild bird seed we were feeding him. After about 3 weeks we were bringing the horses in from the pasture one evening, and he was standing outside the big barn. As we got closer he turned and started walking in- then he started to fly! He perched above one of the stalls, and later in the evening he roosted in the rafters. He repeated this for a few days- flitting up and down the aisle during the day and roosting high at night.
Then he was gone.
We hope he was well enough to find his way back home. He certainly has some stories to tell his buddies!
